SOURCE name change

Transition-1.png
source-logo.png
Transition-2.png

A local Near West resource for aspiring entrepreneurs and small businesses is undergoing significant change in 2021. Seeded in 2016 by IUPUI through its Office of Community Engagement, SOURCE has served as a critical component to the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) facilitated by the Great Places neighborhood strategy and Quality of Life Plan. IUPUI set out to create, reinforce, and enhance an environment where local individuals can learn, start, and grow their business.

SOURCE, IUPUI, and sponsors celebrated achieving a major milestone this past December… where since its inception, SOURCE has served over 1200 individuals, who gained and supplemented their business knowledge and expertise through training and workshops, business coaching, program resource navigation, application assistance, and valuable peer-to-peer networking opportunities.

“Ensuring local access to entrepreneurial resources in the neighborhoods of HaughvilleHawthorneStringtown and We Care, and later expanding to all Indianapolis neighborhoods, SOURCE local presence was critical to achieving the goals and objectives laid out in the Great Place Neighborhoods comprehensive strategy”, explained Steve Thrash, Director of SOURCE since mid-2019. “Area entrepreneurs and support organizations are grateful to IUPUI for affording this opportunity to launch, and now successfully graduate, this valuable community resource to become the locally owned and self-directed resource as was intended from the beginning."

SOURCE continues to serve numerous aspiring and existing entrepreneurs and small businesses, of which over 70% represent the black and Latinx communities, and over 62% are women. Program design and delivery are developed and managed both directly by SOURCE staff, and through long-standing partnerships with the INDY Chamber of Commerce, Business Ownership Initiative (BOI), the Westside Community Development Corporation, the US Small Business Administration, and others.

During 2021, SOURCE is undergoing expansion and enhancement of its’ local Board leadership (see related article)

2021 plans are also underway to increase local outreach, enhance services and networking among the Hispanic community, and bring new innovative programming in now virtual format, broadcast via Facebook live-stream. New and enhanced collaborations are being built, and announcements will follow, including joint programming with the INDY Black Chamber, 16Tech, PITCH Feast, BOI, and many others.

SOURCE PITCH NIGHT COMPETITION WINNER

Rachael Cieslak, owner of Rachael Cieslak Calligraphy

Rachael Cieslak of Rachael Cieslak Calligraphy is the KELLEY School of Business winner in the virtual Fall 2020 SOURCE Pitch Night Competition held for graduates of the SOURCE Entrepreneurship Center “Dream It. Start It. Grow It. – Business Accelerator” course in partnership with the INDY Chamber Business Ownership Initiative (BOI).

Rachael makes art out of words through her traditional copperplate calligraphy, which elevates the sophistication of envelopes, certificates, awards, and other luxury paper products. She offers fully customized recipient envelope addressing and spot calligraphy in pointed pen (this involves a nib, holder, and an inkwell) for bridal customers and special occasions. Corporate entities could utilize this craftsmanship with employee recognition awards, performance certificates, and years of service acknowledgements. Intimate holiday team-gatherings or larger sales meetings where nametags, seating cards, and other paper products don't typically turn heads become an opportunity to impress when handwritten with style.

She offers complete etiquette suggestions and solutions having a background in corporate marketing with companies: White House Black Market (FL), Wolverine World Wide (MI), PGT Industries (FL). She has gained bridal expertise from being a team member at Oliver's Twist Paper, a luxury bridal stationery shop in Carmel, Indiana.

"My approach is always thorough. I like to digest details before making decisions. Before I could transform my calligraphy talent into a business, I needed actual business advice and guidance. Steve Thrash from the SOURCE Entrepreneurship Center and Sarah MacInnis, the Director of Business Coaching Services of the Indy Chamber were great co-teachers helping us entrepreneurs examine our ideas with the goal of formulating solid market-ready business plans over the ten-week course.

The course work really came together for me when we worked through the Business Model Canvas and identified our Value Proposition and the who, what, when, where and why of turning it into a profitable business. I appreciated working virtually with a class of passionate people with such varied and valuable ideas.

IMG_4019.jpeg

I'll be using my online presence to help my business grow but also to share my experience of starting my own business. Please find a way to connect with me on www.rccalligraphy.com or at rachael@rccalligraphy.com and let's get to work together!"

How has SOURCE impacted your business journey?

“SOURCE has been a great opportunity for us because when I first started with SOURCE I had just finished business coaching with SBA. SOURCE helped me open my eyes and think about business in a different way which helped me to switch from doing the job to teaching someone else how to do the job.”

ENTREPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT

Karla Nowlin, owner of Angels of Hope Home Agency, LLC

Every month, we shine a Spotlight on a hardworking entrepreneur who has taken advantage of SOURCE RW’s educational resources. This month, we are featuring Karla Nowlin, owner of Angels of Hope Home Agency, LLC.

Business Facebook: Angels of Hope Home Agency

What is your business?

We are a personal home health agency. We hire nurse aids and go out to people’s homes to help their loved ones with anything from personal care to housekeeping assistants.

What is the story behind Angels of Hope Home Agency, LLC?

I was raised volunteering and helping at the church food pantry. I slowly realized that some people weren’t coming because they couldn’t care for themselves, so from a young age I wanted to figure out a way to help them and that started my passion in this field.

karla Nowlin.jpg

How has SOURCE helped your business?

SOURCE River West is like the best people I’ve ever met. They have been a God-send to me. People think that when they want to start a business that there’s no help out there. Years ago, I thought the same thing. When I asked SOURCE, they helped me so much, and they gave me so much information.

DIP-IN DIABETES IMPACT PROJECT INDIANAPOLIS NEIGHBORHOODS

DIP-IN DIABETES IMPACT PROJECT INDIANAPOLIS NEIGHBORHOODS

DIP-IN Quarterly Update

The Diabetes Impact Project Indianapolis Neighborhoods (DIP-IN) is a neighborhood-based program launched by the Fairbanks School of Public Health at IUPUI in collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company, to address the high incidence of diabetes in three Indianapolis neighborhoods: the Northeast, Northwest, and Near West neighborhoods. The long-term goal of this project is to reduce diabetes-related complications and to ultimately reduce the rate of diabetes in these Indianapolis neighborhoods. The three communities were selected based on high prevalence of diabetes, demographic factors and highly engaged community members and organizations.

DIP-IN SAVI dashboard goes live

DIP-IN-dashboard.jpg

We know many of our DIP-IN stakeholders have had the opportunity to use The Polis Center at IUPUI’s SAVI Profiles to explore and utilize data in their community and organizational work. Through multiple user-friendly data tools, SAVI's vision is to make sure all organizations “have access to and use data to improve planning and decision-making and ultimately improve the quality of life in the communities they serve.” While anyone can go to the SAVI website and access pre-built data dashboards, the team at The Polis Center also works to create special, custom data dashboards, like the “Coronavirus Data Hub” and like our recently launched “DIP-IN Dashboard.”

Over many months, The Polis Center, along with assistance from DIP-IN community residents and the IU Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health at IUPUI, created a custom data dashboard for the three DIP-IN communities.

By going to this link, anyone can now pull up data for each DIP-IN community that covers categories such as Community & Social Context, Economy, Food, Health Care, and more. Unique from other SAVI data tools, this dashboard also includes data from the 2019 DIP-IN Community Survey, where over 1,100 households across the three communities participated. Not only will our DIP-IN team continue using this data dashboard to inform our project goals, but our hope is that others—both within and outside of the DIP-IN communities—will find this data informative and useful in their own work.

Meet: Brittany Crone

Meet our newest DIP-IN Neighborhood CHW, Brittany Crone. Brittany replaces Ben Rose as the Near West Neighborhood CHW, based out of the Westside Community Development Corporation (WCDC). Promoted to a Quality of Life (QOL) Coordinator role at the WCDC, the DIP-IN team is excited that Ben will remain a part of the Near West team. We are also excited to have Brittany on board and asked her a few questions below about her work and Indianapolis background.

What did you do before becoming a part of the DIP-IN team?

Before joining the DIP-IN team as an nCHW I spent about 6 months focused as a full-time student, working as the Ambassador of Latin Night at the Jazz Kitchen, and volunteering. Before that, I was leading a team as a Director of Client Services for a staffing agency here in Indy, as well as coordinating events for that firm.

Tell us more about your background in living in and working with Indianapolis communities.

I was born and raised on the northwest side of Indianapolis in Pike Township, and am currently raising my daughter here as well. I have always had a heart for community work and creating a peaceful space for others for my entire life. Although this is my first official role as a community worker, I have spent the last several years volunteering at food pantries, putting together "blessing bags" for homeless neighbors, working in community gardens, teaching English, and advocating for equity and human rights for all.

B.Crone.jpg

Tell us a story of a time you felt you had a true impact in your community work.

I am not yet in a place I feel I have had an impact. That being said, I do feel the work and our community have had an impact on me. Especially when I see how people can come together again, and again, to coordinate and collaborate on projects, such as Operation Care Kit where care kits for homeless neighbors are assembled. Participating in events like these, meeting people who are like-minded, and being able to take action to brighten someone's day - or simply ask someone their name and actually listen - makes all the difference in my life.

What part of this project are you looking forward to most?

The beauty in this project is that we have a real opportunity to be an ear and a source of empowerment for the neighborhoods where we work. Where there is unity, there is strength and healing. I am most looking forward to becoming a familiar face in the neighborhood so that community members know they have someone in their corner; to be an authentic connector with the community in such a way that community members feel seen, supported, and empowered.

When you are not working, what are you up to?

I am a firm believer life is for living, so when I'm not working my 10-year-old daughter and I like to stay active. I co-lead monthly multiculturalism discussions on the last Saturday of every month, where safe space is created to dive into the "issues and -isms" of society that we experience individually. I am part of a volunteer organization called Woman Within, that is dedicated to empowering womxn to access their inner wisdom through witnessing each others' vulnerability and supporting one another through emotional facilitation. My daughter and I often take walks in the various parks throughout the Indianapolis area - Eagle Creek is our favorite. We enjoy creating together and supporting local artists at art fairs and museums. We also spend time with our Indigenous community here at church on Saturday nights. I love music and dancing, especially Salsa, Bachata, and Samba at the Jazz Kitchen. I can be found volunteering in community gardens (like the one we have in We Care) or in my own garden. I am a singer and actor, so I can occasionally be seen doing performances at various locations around the city, including in the upcoming Onyx Fest 2020. My main focus at this time in my life is to learn as much as I can from those around me in an effort to prepare for the vision I hold to connect more people with mental health care and emotional wellness.

We Care Community Garden yields success

In our last quarterly update, we featured a few ways our DIP-IN communities were pushing forward with their community work during this pandemic; realizing the need for care and support is greater than ever. One of the featured ways the Near West was looking to serve their community was through reviving a community garden in the We Care neighborhood. By collaborating with DIP-IN, Purdue Extension, Groundwork Indy, and various church groups, the We Care Community Garden has yielded amazing success this summer season. As of late July, the We Care Neighborhood has donated a total of 32 pounds of produce to Hawthorne Community Center and the Lord's Pantry at Anna's House. Through food assistance programs at these organizations, the produce goes directly to Near West community members.

Insulin affordability through Lilly

LillyLogo_RGB_Red.jpg

While working on DIP-IN, residents and organizations alike have been interested to hear what Lilly is doing to assist those with diabetes who struggle to afford their Lilly brand insulin. This quarter, our DIP-IN Community Health Workers (CHWs) and residents from our steering committees were able to attend informational meetings on Lilly's Insulin Affordability Solutions. Individuals who use Lilly insulin may be eligible to receive assistance through solutions like automatic discounts, non-branded insulins, or immediate need donations. Those using Lilly insulin are encouraged to check their eligibility for assistance through the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center, by calling the toll free number of 1-833-808-1234.

CHWs and residents who attended the sessions are distributing informational handouts throughout their communities to spread the word about the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center to those who could benefit from it.
